Hey Fishing Buddies, time to start planning to attend the Sproat Lake Loggers fishing derby in Barkley Sound, March 6-7th. Lots of great prizes and only $15 entry per person (last year).
Only 59 days left to get ready. See you there.

I remember hearing that last years derby was a big success. I think the event was been going on for 20 something years now. I think the winning fish was around 19 pounds. Most years the winning fish is in the 15 - 20lb range.
I can't attend but I'd like to.

I haven't missed a derby since 2003 when I attended with my brother-in-law. In 2005 he couldn't make it so the Queen came and he lost his seat for good. We both love it. We always stay at the Nook, taking advantage of excellent room rates and free moorage. They are great hosts. Always lots of prizes and last year, Port Boat House in conjunction with Yamaha offered up a small inflatable and motor as top prize. Excellent. Corie is right about the normal fish size although I have seen a couple slightly bigger. Some years lots of fish, others not so many. Always lots of crab and prawns. One more plug for the Nook, they also offer free camping and launching if you want to bring your own unit. There is a fee for power. See you there.

I don't know what is in store for this year, last year it was a small inflatable boat and 4hp motor. Sweet little unit. Apparently Port Boat House and Yamaha have jumped on board with some prizes. Up till then, the big prize was normally an electric downrigger and some cash. I'm not associated with the derby management, just take part. All the entry fee money goes to prizes. Just a bunch of die hard anglers trying to break the monotony of winter. I can't even tell you who to contact for more info, but Mossman from the Nook may be able to help, or Gone Fishing??

Since this is my first ever time going into this derby more info before hand would be awsome. I am flanged up for the weekend, and ready to go so far, this will be my last trip for some time, since my wife will be in Vancouver shortly after getting some heart issues and operations done.
Where is the weigh in station A good place to stay, and cheap. Do you buy the tickets at Gone fishin in Port or where.
See ya there.

Glad to hear you are thinking of joining in Deeds. Weight in is at the Nook, with final weight in normally around noon on sunday. We stay in the Nook. They have a bunkhouse which is quite cheap. Smaller rooms with 2 sets of bunkbeds, small fridge & locker that go for about $50/night for 2, slightly more for extras. There are 6 rooms and a common kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, dishes, coffee maker, etc. Usually lots of good company. Camping is free for the weekend as is moorage and launching. Only cost is if you want power. I believe Mills Landing was open last year, but we always stay at the Nook so I'm not sure. As for tickets, I still haven't gotten to the bottom yet, but will keep trying to find a seller.

Thanks for the info stressmedicine, I am also going to Port weekend I will ask around to see who is selling tickets and report back. Do you have to call ahead of time to the Nook or could you show up and get in.

BREAKING NEWS I just got an email from Ryan at Gone Fishing and they are carrying the tickets for the Derby. They currently have some in the Port store and he is bringing some down to Nanaimo tomorrow.
Yahoo.
30 days to go.
As for staying at the Nook, if you want a room in the bunkhouse, call ahead. Call Marg at 250-758-4440 to reserve. For camping, I have never seen it so busy another unit couldn't fit, but it still might not be a bad idea to call.

Yup! I got two yesterday. They have two books up there and they are half way through the second. I think there is going to be a good turn out.

Well i was already to go and try my luck, tickets in hand, staying with a friend in Canoe Pass life was good, until the phone rang today. It is the mechanic working on my kicker, it is down for the overhaul rebuild. I thought this 4 stroke would outlast any 2 stroke, I guees I am wrong.
Does a guy spend the money fixing a lemon or sell it for parts and go for another motor, and hope it's not a lemon this time.
