Hi Horns
There is a big group that fishes for salmon. Contact Robert at Pacific Net and twine in Parksville. He will help you get intouch and also if you want to join them.

Hey Horns,

Kayak fishing is becoming increasingly more popular every year. Me and my buddy Darcy tried it for the first time a few years ago at the Moutcha Bay Kayak Salmon Derby. We were able to cross 2 items off of our bucket list - 1)Catch a salmon out of a kayak and 2)Create our own fishing show episode.

The link to the show is here https://vimeo.com/24910053 if you haven't already seen it.

If you have never been to Moutcha Bay in Nootka Sound its a great place to learn how to kayak fish especially in late august / early september. As you can see on the video, most mornings the bay is flat calm.

Yes that was me that fell off the kayak. I was trying to net a 20+lb chinook in a little bit of chop and the hook got caught in the net as the fish made a dive. Im not sure there was anyway to prevent rolling without letting go of both my rod and net. Beginners falling off the boat can be very dangerous especially with boat traffic nearby or in cold waters.

Luckily I was close to our camera boat so they hauled me in. I was only about 100yds from shore so could have swam with my boat there too. As a beginner, trying to get back into the boat once off was impossible! I was not able to do it.

Kayak fishing is a blast, but be careful! and always wear your life jacket.

Where are you guys from?

Both Darcy and I grew up in Parksville/QB area.

Tried my hand at trolling last week using a deep six, small flasher and Jughead Shaker (hoochie) in Alberni inlet.
Fished a total of 30 minutes and caught three fish with no real idea of bottom depth, gear depth, or speed.
Had a ''crew'' of three on my ''single'' Hobie kayak (trimaran sailing kayak with ''trampolines'').
PIC ON FACEBOOK
I would say that sportfishing was somewhat lost on me due to my commercial fishing background, BUT fishing from a yak ads something very fun.
I'll hope to join some of you guys at some point in Sooke maybe?

BTW, if you're kind enough to click the ''like'' button in my picture link it would help me win a sounder so I wouldn't have to risk bouncing bottom in the future... thanks!cheers
