What do you do when you can't beach fish. You go to the river. The Big Q is high but clear and fishable. I tried allot of offerings . Only when I used the Bolo spinners with Colorado blades did I started to catch Coho. Lucky day three on two landed.

This is the only fishable river. Its high but clear. The fly and gear anglers are out. I have caught the coho so far with Colorado Bolo spinners and others with spoons. Today I had one on spinner and one on jig. With out a float I was doing the twitch technique with the jig.

We always scan the close beaches but they are vacant of activity

Today was one coho and two chrome chums. The Colorado spinners got the chums and a pink jig for the coho.
River is still high but lots of angler of all ages ,gender , fly and gear anglers trying their best to catch a salmon. Lots of room as you can fish both sides of the river. Majority of angler are staying on the right side of the river following the tail or gravel road . Access to allot of spots is all the way to the highway bridge. If you do the walk its about a 20 minute walk on the gravel road to get to the HWY bridge.

you can fish with spinners, spoons, bead what ever lure as long as it not bait or has a scent. I use two rods one with level wind and float for spinners and one with spinning reel for casting jigs.

Find a seam were there is slow water and moving water . The coho are usually in the slow unless moving up river.

good luck

The big Q has been fully open since October 9th. Change was FN1100 with no restriction to gear recreational fishery. We phoned the hatchery themselves to confirm the change and was confirmed. We also personally visited the hatchery and talk to them to confirm again . Not many new. They do know now as allot of gear and fly anglers are testing the waters.

Confirmed by Hatchery Manager yesterday....6000+ Coho have been released to move up the river...will go all the way to Horn Lake and then move back down the river to various spots to spawn. Expecting close to 120,000 chum...most still to come.

Hey Gill, I had read that notice but nowhere is there a mention of of it being open to all kinds of gear. Very confusing, Provincial regulations still state artificial fly only. Sure would be nice to see a official notice.

What can I say.... Gear and fly were fishing before I got there October 9th. They the hatchery verified to those anglers and no notice to the contrary came out. We checked on the 15th by phone and in person. I didn't start till Oct 16 when the beaches slowed down.

Wow, that's great news with the big Q with the return of coho and expected chums. Over 10,000 chinook in the cowie as well. Looks like the east coast rivers are doing great this year.

River is high but still fishable. They open the gates this morning around 9 am. The river flooded with chum. I think a few coho snuck through . With the heavy rain it made the day very uncomfortable . I was able to get one coho and randy and I got three chums. Nice but the coho were very coloured. Saw a few small chrome coho. Thats it for me me for the season.
Very nice to have the rubber net for a quick and safe landing for the salmon. With the handle retracted its easy to carry.

Maybe its time to be done with hatchery-river-fishing...the fish are not biting and simply trying to do what nature intended. The ones who have made it back...wow that is spectacular...let them do their thing...did I mention they are not biting, mostly stale fish and are very colored...give them a break and move on to some other fishery and let the spawners alone...just my thoughts...did I mention they are not biting...
