Thats gotta be braid. Line on the spool is pretty dark and its a small reel. Based on how much that rod is under tension as he is fighting it...mono would of snapped.

Gil,

Ha! I think most people just shake their head and wonder why I have had a fair amount of luck on the breakwater. And they wouldn't be entirely wrong -- it's largely luck with a good dose of patience thrown in.

I use braid on all my reels now, including my extra-light salmon gear strung with either 10- or 15-pound test. The particular reel Reid was using was probably a 30-year old Daiwa beater spooled with 30-pound test braid with a five-foot 40-pound test mono leader. And as I tell or show anyone who asks, I use two double surgeon's loop knots for a drop-shot rigging set-up.

Cliff

I really try to avoid taking ling over 15 to 18 pounds, but this one turned out to be bigger than I thought it was when I told my son Reid to go ahead and gaff it. (At least I showed him that the old man still has a crank or two of the reel left in him!)

I was doing some chuckling this time because I had Reid acting as my Sherpa and he was dealing with the questions and the photo requests. Luckily for him it's still early in the season and there weren't all that many people on the breakwater.

Reid picked up another good eating-sized lingcod today.

It's funny, I'm the one who ties some new drop-shot leaders before going to bed; I buy the gear and the bait; I tell him where to set up; and he catches the fish. And I get a bigger kick out of it than if I'd caught it myself!

At 70 cm. and a little under 5 1/2 pounds this is the smallest lingcod I've retained over the last few years, but I feel better about taking this size than the 20-pounder I took a few weeks ago. (I really wish I'd had a better look at that one before I told my son to go ahead and gaff it and it turned out to be about five pounds heavier than I thought it was.)

WTG Reid and Cliff. Congrats. It's not easy to pull those lincods from the breakwater. Haven't fished there over 15-20 years but still fondly recalls those days.
Thanks for sharing. It's always fun to see local spots producing. We are lucky to live in this country.

Keep up the good works and enjoy ur time with ur son.

I'm glad it brings back some memories.

We are indeed lucky to live in this country and, in my opinion, on this coast in particular.

Believe me, I relish every minute I get to spend with my son on outings like this.

Regards.
