Just wondering if anybody was fishing Barkley Sound on the long weekend? If so, how was it?

Our boat fished 4 days this past weekend, all in the upper Alberni Inlet, hardly anyone fishing, no one catching fish from what we saw, I had the GoPro down for 2 different days and didn't see any fish. We lost a sockeye behind the boat at sunrise at Franklin on Monday. Got a dog fish too. Fishing with anchovies, targeting chinook.

The good news is the rain is coming and my fishing records indicate this coming weekend will be when the fishing turns on again.

Friends tell me the sound is a bit better but hit or miss.

Hey Slayer,
Thanks a lot for this, we are coming out for the weekend and fishing out Bamfield way.
Lets hope the rain brings on the bite.
Thanks Again,

Update: Some fish were caught yesterday in the upper inlet. Sounds like they are starting to show up again (they were here a few weeks ago but then it slowed down).

Thanks again Slayer. A buddy has been fishing all around the China Creek area (don't know all the points of reference) for the past 2 mornings and nothing! He said very little being caught.

We got one 24 pounds this morning before all of the wind kicked up, my friend got one almost 20 pounds on his boat, China Creek for him, Polly's Pt for us. Both fish at 35 feet deep. Wind is calming down now, hoping for calm waters in the morning :) Good luck.

24 pounds, nice fish! We mainly fished the Bamfield area this weekend, it was very slow even the charters weren't catching anything unless they went outside. We caught 4, biggest was 15 pounds, all caught on bait between 60 and 75 feet. I'm back out right after the derby, should be great by then. already can't wait!
When we came back to China Creek everyone was saying how hot lone tree was, one guy at the cleaning station had a 30 pounder.

Surprised to hear it is slow in the sound. Lone Tree is hot for sure. My mom is visiting from Nova Scotia, we were out this morning, at Lone Tree with my wife and son, fishing at 6 am, we landed a double header, 11 and 15 pounds, then we got an 18 pounder shown in the picture, what a beautiful fish.

Tried Franklin later on and it was slow. Anchovies. Good luck! At least you did not get skunked. :)

Hey Slayer,
That is a nice fish. Were you out today? My buddies caught 3 at lone tree and lost 2, all on bait and white hootchies.
Good Fishing.

Yes we were out, lost a chinook behind the boat, then we got a nice 9 pound coho, at Lone Tree, anchovy for bait.

Sadly saw a seal likely destroy a salmon that the boat next to us was reeling in; it was a tug of war between the boat and the seal. The boat won but I think the seal chewed up his fish, the guy was cussing quite bit, too bad.

Right after that the boat to the right and ahead of us had a fish on, they hollered to let us know, we swerved left but then the fish surfaced surfaced in front of us but there was another swirl of water at the same time (seal?). They lost their fish, we told them we thought it was a seal.

Interesting morning at Lone Tree. Going again tomorrow. :)

How's the fishing been in the sound or the canal? Where? What and when? Heading back out after the derby. Can't wait! All info is greatly appreciated by this prairie boy. Thanks

The fishing in the upper inlet has slowed since late last week. At least for our boat and most other boats we see fishing around us. Lone Tree is still the best place to fish, crack of dawn, the bite is on then and off before you know it. There was a commercial opening last night. The last time I was out was last Saturday night, hooked a nice chinook in front of APD mill but lost it at the boat. I have been using anchovies, various teaser heads but bloddy nose if working best for me, 6 foot leader, green hot spot flasher, 35-61 feet deep at 2.4-2.6 knots. Not sure if I am in the derby this year, I am on call...good luck to everyone! No 50 pounders this year on day 1 ok??? Save it for the last day. :)
