The last five days has seen some terrific salmon fishing in Barkley Sound Locations. The fishing is ''Now'' what it should be for June. Prior to the last few days the fish came in lulls but recently there has been more abundance of salmon in the general area of the sound. The salmon had been feeding on anchovy, herring and needle fish. But lately large schools of small herring that look like they are just out of this years herring spawn have become the choice of diet for the migrating Chinook and Coho. Some good fishing has taken place at Pill Point, Diplock and The Swale Rock area.
The best fishing has been on the surf line from Meares out to Cree Island and also Kirby Point to Edward King. Cree and Austin have had Chinook up to eighteen pounds with most of the fish averaging eleven to fifteen pounds. There are also lots of early Coho averaging five or six pounds with a few already hitting the eight pound mark. The past few days has seen a long bite from the low tide right into the high. At Cree on Saturday there was a period of time over three hours that it seemed that those fishing the area constantly had some action. The fish have been hitting anchovy in the green haze, purple haze, and army truck glow teaser head. With the smaller bait especially in the Cree Island area small three inch coyote spoons, the herring aid and cookies and cream Coho Killer and the black and white and green and white TKO spoons are working very well. With the First of July weekend closing in lets hope the weather stays good and the fish continue to pour into the area as they feed on an abundance of rich resources of bait fish before continuing their long migratory journey to their natal rivers, creeks, and streams.
