Over the last few days in the Alberni inlet we have continued to have some relatively good Sockeye SPORT fishing. For a sport fishing opportunity that was supposed to not occur it has been a surprisingly a very goodfishing month in the Inlet. The key is finding some of the schools. With a month of warm air temperatures the fish have schooled up and have definitely gone to deeper water than what they were on the first of July. The China Creek Wall, parts of Cous Creek and also Underwood have all been areas with good fishing for many anglers. The salmon are now in sixty-five to eighty feet of water. They continue to hit the pink and black, pink and blue, bubble gum (mp15) hootchies and also black hooks. The leader length depending on the speed of the boat is from eighteen inches up to twenty-six or twenty-seven inches. We are hoping that some continued good fishing will last into the August long weekend. The per day limit continue to be FOUR Sockeye. West Coast Vancouver Island areas and also Robertson Creek and Somass River Chinook and Coho are expected to be above average returns. Chinook should begin to show up sometime around the tenth of August followed by Coho. The peak of the Chinook salmon fishing season is often around Labor Day which is the time of The Alberni Valley Salmon Festival.
