There has been some ''ON and OFF'' salmon fishing around the Bamfield area. There have been a few good days of sport fishing at Beale, Whittlestone, Kirby, and Edward King. The salmon fishing inshore has definitley been inconsistent. There has been some good numbers of Coho close to the rocks and kelp beds in shallow water and also some Chinook in close to shore and in deeper water. The Coho have ranged in weight from eigth to eleven pounds and have been hitting small three and three and a half inch spoons, neeedle fish hootchies, and anchovy. The best teaser heads have been green haze, army truck glow, and chartreuse. The best and most consistent fishing has been offshore on the ''Big Bank'' just off the Rats Nose and the ''Egg'' and Hali West. There have been loads of Chinook salmon which have been on the smaller size to date and have ranged from eight to fourteen pounds. There has also been a few larger fish in the low to mid twenty pound range. The Halibut fishing out on the banks has also been fabulous with many sport anglers and anglers on ''GUIDED'' trips landing halibut on the pick and also on the troll fishing the bottom and sometimes the mid water. The areas around the Bamfield Harbor mouth should pickup dramtatically over the next few weeks. All forecasts are showing good and above average returns of Coho and Chinook to West Coast Vancouver Island. The Bamfield and Barkley Sound areas should have some excellent sport fishing in August and early September.
