The Sockeye sport fishing opportunity in the Alberni Inlet was an added bonus in the month of July for sport anglers. A sport fishery that was not supposed to happen turned out to be very good. The Sockeye season opened on the first of July with a two day limit and then on the eighth of July the limit jumped to four per day. The total return to the Somass River jumped from one hundred and seventy thousand to just over four hundred thousand. Many anglers world wide enjoyed this spectacular sport fishery. There are still a few pockets of Sockeye in the inlet waters. Those out fishing can find a few schools and will likely pick up a few Sockeye. There have been a few Chinook salmon come into the system. Some have been seen in the Somass River and reports of a few Chinook picked up on Sockeye gear and also Chinook gear have been recorded in the China Creek area, the China Creek Wall and Lone Tree Point. On the weekend one angler focused on Chinook at first light and landed a twenty-seven pound Chinook at Lone Tree. We are looking forward to a great month of August in the Alberni Inlet. Chinook and Coho returns to the Somass River are forecast to be above average.
