Various spots around Barkley Sound have had increased numbers of salmom migrating into many areas over the last couple of days. Edward King to Kirby Point and Cree Island right to Pill Point have all had some good fishing over the past few days. One angler stopped at Assets Point and landed a surprising twenty-four pound salmon headed likely to the Somass River. The salmon returning to West Coast Vancouver Island are forecast to be strong in 2017. We are now entering that time of year when these fish which are headed to the many streams, creeks and rivers in Pacific Rim areas will begin to show up along the surf line and the many Barkley Sound locations. During the last two days Coho and Chinook salmon were prominent at Swale Rock, Meares, Edward King, and Austin Island. There are large amounts of bait in the form of very small immature herring that the salmon are feeding on. The fish are shallow (forty to seventy feet) and are feeding heavily. Anchovy is always a good bet but with the small bait Coho Killers and small TKO spoons seem to be working very well. Many anglers have landed Chinook in the mid to high teens. There have been a few Chinook salmon weighing in the twenty to twenty-five pound range. August and early September should be spectacular with some world class salmon fishing in Barkley Sound.
