Chinook Salmon and even a few Coho showed up in the Alberni Inlet over the past week. Definitley this past Thursday and Friday had some of the best fishing. Saturday saw a bit of a weather change with stronger winds early and some rain late in the day which seemed to slow the Sunday sport salmon fishing. This is not to say that there were not any good sized Chinnok landed on Saturday and Sunday but it did seem to slow slightly. The salmon seemed to not slow and hang around Barkley Sound as they usually do. Migrating in thrity to sixty feet of water the early Chinook are hitting anchovy in a variety of Teaser Heads but the larger Hootchies seem to be also working very well. White and off white colors plus the octopus big red in what is a O-2 or pink in the O-15 are also working very well early in the season. This is just the beginning of what is termed a great season for Barkley Sound and the Alberni Inlet. Forecast show that sixty to ninety thoushand Chinook should be returning to the area. Fifty-seven percent of the Chinook will the age classed at three years old with the remainder at four and five year olds. There shouold be some nice sized salmon landed during the second half of August and early September. For more information and to organize you salmon fishing trip call Doug at 250 731 7389.
