The September Labor Day Weekend is quickly approaching and the city of Port Alberni is gearing up for the annual Labor Day Weekend Salmon Fishing Derby. With that being said the salmon fishing in the Inlet and down in Barkley Sound areas has been relatively ''GOOD''. The Inlet has had its lulls but most days many anglers and guides have had remarkably good fishing days. The outlook for returns of Chinook and Coho to the Somass River is well above average. Many anglers have had success fishing in relatively shallow water using a variety of hootchies in a variety of red, pink, white and green hootchies. The Octopus 15-bubblegum and the OCTOPUS 16 AND 02 plus the AORL12 and purple haze hootchies all have worked well. With fresh salmon coming into the area on a daily basis anchovy is beginning to work perhaps even a little better than hootchies. Various teaser heads in purple haze and green haze and also army truck glow have been working well over the last few days. The Annual Labor Day Weekend Salmon Derby will certainly bring a good number of fishing enthusiasts to the area. Consider and read all safety regulations and fishing regulation and boundaries in the area fishing. For more information call Doug at 250 724 2502.
