Not Targeted: Chum Salmon, Sockeye Salmon
There has been a lot of sport and commercial fishing in the Alberni Inlet. There is a very high daily migration of Chinook and Coho into the Somass River system and a good number of Chinook and Coho have been sitting out in front of the river mouth waiting for high tide, cooler water and rain to make their final approach to their spawning grounds. Anglers have had some great success over the past six or seven days fishing with a variety of plugs, anchovy and hootchies. The fish are all in very shallow water and seem to be interested in biting in the early morning and the evening. Lone Tree and in front of the Coulson Mill also have had some good fishing in the morning hours. There have been a few anglers fishing the McTush area for Coho and have had success using Coho killers and white and green hootchies. The salmon will continue their migration to the Somass River through October. However as in past years the fish often quit biting the various lures anglers throw at them later in September.
