Big November Winds and Rain Open to a December High Pressure System

The West Coast of Vancouver Island was battered by big heavy winds and rain in November. However December has been calmed by a large high pressure system that has protected Vancouver Island's West Coast. Dense fog has covered many areas but the afternoons and the last two days on the west coast have opened to welcoming sunny skies. Barkley Sound has lots of undersize Chinook especially around Pill Point, Samatao, Diplock and Swale Rock. A few sport fishermen have been out on the water over the last two days and have landed a few feeder Chinook close to Pill Point and Tszarus Island. The fish are deep and are taking anchovy but with so many small salmon spoons in Irish Cream, cookies and cream, and green nickel have also been working. Using spoons cuts the use of a lot of anchovy. Winter Chinook fishing should pick up in later January, February and March. The 2017 summer salmon fishing in the Sound was relatively good especially towards the surf line. We are hoping 2018 will provide some of the same results. We are now organizing our 2018 lodge accomodation and fishing packages. Call Doug at 250 731 7389.
