The Winter Chinook fishing in Barkley Sound has been fairly slow. Not a lot of adventurous anglers have been out on the water over the past two weeks. Temperature below freezing over this period of time have definitley kept some of the water. The first weekend of March is fast approaching which means the first salmon fishing derby of the year will take place. The Sproat Loggers Fishing Derby will be held on the first Saturday and Sunday of March which is the third and fourth day of the month. The derby headquarters will once again be at Poett Nook. Last year local Alberni resident Morgan Steede won the derby with a beautiful Chinook salmon weighing just over twenty pounds. Some of the hot locations to fish at this time of year are often Sarita, the Bamfield Was and part of the Harbor. Also Scotch Bay and the Whistle Buoy and the Bamfield side of Flemng Island around Sanford. The fish are often in very deep water and the rule of thumb is often where there is bait there often will be feeder Chinook in the area. Often derby tickets can be purchased at Gone Fishing Stores and Port Boat House. Anchovy if there are not a number of undersized salmon around is often a good choice. Spoons in the three or three and a half inch and sometime even smaller are also excellent. Some anglers like using the old stand by hootchies in the green spatterback, army truck, and the AORL 12.
