The winter Chinook fishing around Bamfield and most of Barkley Sound has picked up dramatically during the month of March. The Sproat Loggers Derby was a big hit with some nice salmon landed by many of the anglers participating. The two days of weather for the derby were beautiful and one might even say balmy. The top two fish were in the seventeen and fifteen pound category. Brent of Alberni fished with Bob and Pat also of Port Alberni and landed a 17.6 Chinook around the Diplock area. Brent won the Derby and also won a 9.9 Yamaha high thrust motor donated by Port Boathouse.
Second Place went to Bob D. who landed a 15.6 winter Chinook. Bob's prize was a Scotty Prawn Puller plus traps which was donated by Gone Fishing. Derek L. won third prize which was a beautiful Island reel donated by J.W. Berry Trucking. The Derby was hosted out of Poett Nook on the first weekend of March. Since that time anglers who have been out on the water have had some success along the Bamfield Wall all the way out to Beale. Sanford Point and Kirby Point have been two good places the last few weeks for local fisher people. Of course the weather which was amazing for the loggers derby has been up and down through out the month. Anchovy and small three and three and a half inch spoons have been working the best. We are getting close to April and the weather pattern will begin to change. We are looking forward to a great 2018 saltwater fishing season.
