The Winter Chinook fishing in Barkley Sound areas has improved over the last few weeks. The weather has played havoc as November like conditions have persisted right into the middle of April in the Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound areas. Barkley Sound has had a few days where local fisher persons have had opportunity to fish from the surfline areas right back to Swale Rock and Vernon Bay. Meares, Sail Rock and Great Bear have had some nice salmon up to fifteen and sixteen pounds over the past few weeks. Anchovy in chartreuse and green haze behind green and red glow flashers have been working well. The best lures have been small spoons from two and a half to three and a half and four inch spoons. There have also been some nice fish landed by sport fisher persons on the back side of Swale Rock right back to Main Bay. There has been a lot of bait in the area but the bait has been very small. With this in mind small spoons have been working well. Cookies and Cream and glow cop car have been two great spoons as have a small green and silver and blue and silver spoons. There are reports that the salmon fishing in north portions of West Coast Vancouver Island has improved dramatically. Salmon migrating to some of the big watersheds to the south are in good numbers. We are expecting the fishing along the surf line areas and inshore will improve dramatically during the second half of April and into May.
